City of North Shore Cadet Unit
The City of North Shore Cadet Unit is a youth organisation, part of the New Zealand Cadet Forces. What makes it different from any other youth organisation? It provides teenagers with activities that are highly enjoyable, for one thing. But more importantly, it teaches them important life skills such as pride, discipline, teamwork and, most especially, leadership.
When a teenager first enters the Cadet Forces, they find themselves in an environment where the chain of command is highly regarded. For example, the teen will first be what is known as a probationary cadet, a term lasting four weeks. In this time the unit will scout the cadet and encourage them to join the unit. When this term is up, the cadet may join as a first year cadet.
As a first year, this person can experience alot of what cadet forces has to offer, but there is still much more that the cadet cannot do yet. Why? Because the cadet forces is not a brief period of fun for a cadet, but a long relationship with the cadet, much like school. The cadet will be trained and developed within cadets, and will come out a much better person.
